The role of countries like Ukraine …will be expanding as they move away from Russian domination and enter global markets. Ukraine is also moving towards Europe and represents a very important country in terms of agricultural, mineral and human resources.

Ukraine is a lower middle-income country with a gross national income per capita of USD 2,230 in 2006. It is the second largest country in Europe with an area of 603 628 sq. km, or 5.7% of the Europe. Ukraine has a population of about 47 million people. The country’s administrative structure comprises 24 regions (oblasts) and one autonomous republic, Crimea, which became part of Soviet Ukraine in 1954. An estimated 68 percent of Ukrainians live in urban areas, with over four million inhabitants in the capital Kiev, the largest city. The other large cities are Lviv – 2.6 mln, Kharkiv - 1.5 mln, Dnipropetrovsk – 1.1 mln, Donetsk - 1.1 mln and Odessa – 1.0 mln.
